MATERIALS · THE HAUSE DECKING GUIDE

Composite and PVC: similar choices, different systems.

Understand the core, cap, movement and installation documents before comparing finishes.

Start with the exact construction

Composite commonly blends polymer with organic filler. PVC or polymer decking uses a synthetic core without wood filler. A cap is a separate protective outer layer, and its coverage and composition vary by collection.

These broad names do not identify the board profile, allowable application or attachment method. A premium label or attractive colour does not replace product documentation.

Compare the board in your setting

Bring samples into the actual sun and shade beside your exterior finishes. Consider surface feel, heat exposure, nearby glazing, drainage and the way the deck will be used. Avoid assuming an entire material family is always cooler, more slip-resistant or better suited to a particular site.

Check heat and walking-surface considerations for the exact product and exposure.

Ask for two complete systems

  • Exact collection, edge profile and available lengths.
  • Current support, movement and fastening instructions.
  • Approved use on stairs, borders and any special application.
  • Care, fade/stain coverage, labour terms and substitutions.

Have the supplier explain differences that affect installation and total scope.
