INSTALLATION ESSENTIALS · THE HAUSE DECKING GUIDE

The details beneath a beautiful deck.

Prepare for installation with the right structure, product instructions and finishing plan. Requirements are specific to the selected system.

Start with the exact product instructions

Identify the board collection, profile, fastening system and current Canadian installation documents. Different products and layouts have different support, temperature, stair and fastening conditions.

Use the applicable product evaluation where one is relevant. An evaluation for particular profiles does not approve every product sold under the same broad material name.

Inspect and prepare the structure

Before decking goes down, assess the condition and suitability of the framing, house connection, footings and support arrangement. Verify joist and stair support requirements, including changes needed for diagonal boards or special layouts.

Check blocking, rail-post connections, levelness, ventilation and water drainage. Follow the chosen system’s instructions for framing protection and contact between materials. Resolve structural questions before covering them with a new surface.

Allow for movement and drainage

Engineered decking changes with temperature. End gaps, edge clearances and attachment procedures depend on the material, board length and installation temperature.

There is no single gap table or joist spacing that fits every composite deck. Keep the product-specific instructions available during layout, cutting and fastening. Plan drainage and ventilation as part of the complete assembly.

Use an approved fastening system

Confirm compatible clips, screws and plugs for the exact decking and framing. Check the rules for board ends, butt joints, borders, stairs and exposed edges. Concealed fasteners do not remove the need for correct support and alignment.

Account for fascia and trim details separately; their attachment and movement requirements may differ from the walking surface. Avoid substitutions unless the product manufacturer confirms compatibility.

Keep the work sequence clear

  1. Confirm permits, design and responsibilities.
  2. Inspect and prepare the structure.
  3. Verify the material delivery and product identification.
  4. Lay out boards, joints, borders and supported ends.
  5. Install using the current product instructions.
  6. Complete stairs, guards, fascia and site cleanup.
  7. Walk through the finished scope and care requirements.

Ask for a proper handover

Keep installation photos, the final scope, receipts, product documents and any required warranty registration. Record the installer’s contact and clarify who handles any follow-up work.
