Keep debris and spills under control
Sweep away leaves and debris, keep drainage paths clear and attend to spills promptly. Dirt and organic matter can collect around furniture and between boards, so give hidden areas attention too.
Use the cleaner, tools and method recommended for the exact collection. Test where the manufacturer recommends and rinse as directed. A cleaning method suitable for one board may damage another.
Read the care guide before pressure washing
Pressure-washer permissions and limits differ between manufacturers and between product generations. Some instructions restrict pressure washing to rinsing; older products may have different restrictions again.
Use the selected product’s current care document for pressure, nozzle, distance, cleaners and brushing. Do not treat a generic internet pressure-washing recipe as suitable for all composite or PVC decking.
Plan for sun and reflected heat
Deck surfaces can become hot in direct sunlight. Assess samples outdoors, consider shade and use appropriate footwear when needed. Colour, weather and exposure all influence how the space feels.
Concentrated reflections from Low-E glass can create unusual heat exposure and damage decking. Discuss nearby glazing and any visible concentrated reflections with the supplier before installation.
Take care through winter
Clear snow using the tools permitted for the selected product. A plastic shovel can help avoid the scratching associated with metal edges, but follow the manufacturer’s directions for technique and product compatibility.
Check the specific guidance before choosing a de-icer. Ice and snow can make outdoor walking surfaces slippery; keep safe access in mind and avoid scraping aggressively to expose the boards.
Protect the details
Check the product guidance for furniture feet, rugs, barbecue mats, planters and concentrated loads. Move and lift heavy objects with care. Inspect drains, joints, fasteners, stairs and guards as part of seasonal upkeep.
Report movement, loose components or structural concerns to the person responsible for the installation rather than disguising the problem with a new surface treatment.
Keep a simple care record
Save your product identification, care guide and warranty. Note cleaning methods and dates, and keep photos if an issue develops. If you are unsure about a stain or chemical, ask the manufacturer before trying a stronger treatment.
