What is composite decking?
Composite decking is an engineered board made from a blend of materials. Wood-plastic composites combine polymers with organic filler. Formulations vary: some products use alternative fillers, such as rice hulls. The exact composition matters more than the word “composite” on its own.
Many contemporary boards have a protective cap around part or all of the core. The cap, core, profile and surface finish form a product system; compare the specific collection rather than assuming all boards perform alike.
Why homeowners consider it
The appeal is a finished outdoor surface without the same recurring staining or painting routine as a traditional wood deck. You can explore coordinated colours, textured surfaces and concealed fastening options while planning the look of the whole space.
Less refinishing does not mean no maintenance. Boards still need cleaning, the structure needs attention, and the installation must suit the selected product.
Know the practical limits
Decking is a walking surface, not a substitute for structural framing. The substructure, stairs, guards and connections require their own design. Existing framing may need repair or adjustment before new decking is installed.
Outdoor surfaces can become hot in direct sun, and wet, snowy or icy conditions require care. Think about shade, footwear, drainage and winter access as part of the design. Avoid choosing on promises such as “slip-proof” or “maintenance-free.”
Ask these questions before buying
- Which exact collection and board profile am I being quoted?
- Is it appropriate for my deck, stairs and intended use?
- What cap coverage, approved fasteners and support conditions apply?
- Can I see a physical sample in the deck’s actual light?
- Which installation and care documents apply in Canada?
- What does the warranty cover, exclude and require?
