Start with safe, practical circulation
Place stairs around the route to the yard, doors, furniture and everyday use. Include landings and changes of direction in your sketch. A large deck with an awkward entry can be less useful than a modest one with a clear route.
Stair geometry, support and connections need the applicable local requirements and product-specific instructions. Do not assume the support rules for a deck field apply unchanged to stair treads.
A railing appearance is only part of the system
Guard posts and attachments must work with the structure. Confirm the approved system, openings, height, gates and any glass panels with the designer or authority. Requirements depend on location, elevation and use.
Consider maintenance, views and nearby reflected heat when choosing finishes. Privacy screens and pergolas introduce additional loads and approvals.
