What resurfacing means
Resurfacing replaces surface and finishing components while retaining an assessed structure. It is a different scope from rebuilding the whole deck. Suitability depends on the condition and arrangement of the frame, foundations and connections.
Trex’s resurfacing guidance starts with structural condition and support compatibility. Existing wood decking does not prove its framing is ready for an engineered replacement.
Check before promising a simple swap
- Frame and hardware condition; water damage or movement.
- Joist layout and support for the proposed board direction.
- House connection, drainage and ventilation.
- Stairs, guard posts, borders and finished heights.
- Permits and inspection requirements for the work.
Allow for problems that may only become visible after removal.
Compare repair with rebuilding
Ask for a written assessment and a defined allowance or change process for concealed repairs. If substantial structure work is needed, compare a full replacement option rather than preserving a frame solely to keep the first quotation low.
Select “Resurface an existing deck” in the quote form and describe what is known about the frame.
