PROJECTS · THE HAUSE DECKING GUIDE

Check the address before committing to the design.

Canadian deck approvals depend on the local authority and project scope.

Start with the authority for your property

Canada’s provinces and territories set and administer building requirements, with municipal roles that vary by jurisdiction. Identify the authority that handles your address and ask which adopted code, permit process and inspections apply.

There is no single national permit threshold for every deck. Covers, elevation, stairs, property boundaries and changes to an existing structure can affect the review.

Prepare the information the authority needs

Keep a property/site plan and a measured deck sketch showing the house, boundaries, levels and stairs. Ask what structural drawings or professional review are required. Condo or strata permission, easements and neighbourhood restrictions may be separate from a building permit.

Adding electrical, gas, plumbing, a roof or heavy features can introduce additional work and approvals.

For Calgary and Alberta projects

Use the Greater Calgary guide and the actual municipality’s permit resources. Calgary, Airdrie and Cochrane publish their own application instructions; one city’s process is not a province-wide rule.

Clarify in the written scope who applies, supplies drawings and arranges inspections before setting a start date.
