PLANNING · THE HAUSE DECKING GUIDE

Turn a rough idea into useful measurements.

Prepare a clear sketch before you request a quotation or order boards.

Divide the space into measurable sections

Sketch the outline viewed from above. Label the house connection, doors, corners, stairs and changes in level. Measure each section and record one unit consistently. For a rectangular section, length multiplied by width gives its plan area; add separate sections without counting overlaps twice.

Curves, cut-outs and angled layouts need more detail. Mark approximate measurements as approximate rather than treating the sketch as a construction drawing.

Measure the details area cannot explain

  • Height above adjacent ground and any slope beneath the deck.
  • Door thresholds, clearances and intended finished levels.
  • Stair position, landings and access routes.
  • Guard lengths, posts, borders and fascia edges.
  • Existing frame layout and areas needing assessment.

Keep area separate from the order quantity

Board width, lengths, direction, joints and supported cut ends affect the takeoff. A rectangle’s area does not establish an order quantity or installed price.

Use the design studio for ideas and illustrative layouts, then include your measured sketch in the scope discussion. Final dimensions need site confirmation.
