Composite does not mean fire-proof
Fire performance depends on the exact product and the way it is used. A rating for one board or assembly does not apply automatically to all composite decking. Confirm local requirements, applicable test documentation and installation details with qualified project advice.
Do not replace a structural or wildfire assessment with a broad material claim.
Look above and beneath the deck
FireSmart Canada advises considering deck material and the exposed underside, as well as combustible items and debris around the home. Leaves, storage and attached features can contribute to exposure even when the walking surface is carefully selected.
Plan access for cleaning and inspect hidden debris traps. Ask how skirting or screening works with ventilation, drainage and the required assembly.
Coordinate grills, fire features and covers
Follow the appliance’s placement and clearance requirements and the decking manufacturer’s instructions. Gas, electrical and structural work may need separate approvals. Do not improvise a heat shield or assume a mat makes every appliance location suitable.
Include fire features and any wildfire concern in the scope conversation before choosing a layout.
