PLANNING · THE HAUSE DECKING GUIDE

Leave room for the features before building the frame.

Plan shade, lighting, privacy and heavy features with the complete assembly.

Some additions change the structure

A hot tub, large planter, roof, pergola or privacy screen can change loads and connections. Include these plans when the deck is designed; adding them after the surface is installed can require substantial changes.

Confirm responsibility for structural design, local approvals and any professional review. Do not use the design studio’s quantities as evidence that an added load is supported.

Coordinate utilities and water protection

Lighting, outdoor kitchens and fire features may require electrical, gas or plumbing work. Plan access and approved clearances before the boards conceal the route. Coordinate drilling, attachment and maintenance with the chosen decking system.

Under-deck living space or storage also needs an appropriate drainage assembly.

Separate essential work from optional upgrades

Ask for a clear base scope and separate feature options. Include foundations, hardware, utilities, inspections and finishing for each option rather than pricing only the visible feature.

Explain the features you want in the quote message so the layout, budget and work sequence can be reviewed together.
